9. Jnana Prabodhini Shivpradesh

For the agricultural development of hilly areas like Shivganga and Gunjwani valleys, watershed development is the best approach. JP volunteers help develop technical and social expertise to bring about such a developm ent through people's participation. In the Mangdari sub valley which comprises of 3 villages with 1500 hectares, a local water committee was formulated in Oct. 98 . An action plan was evolved along with the farmers and the document was submitted to 'CAPAR T, Ministry of Rural Areas and Employment, New Delhi. Village leaders visited Ralegan Siddhi and took training in January 2000. Under the Drought Prone Area Programme, 13 farm ponds were completed in Feb. 2000 in the villages Kusgaon, Khopi, Ranze, Kanjal e and Parawadi. A post project evaluation of work done at Sasewadi was conducted by CAPART and volunteers of Vanrai - Representative of DANIDA in September 99. The increasing agricultural production, the change in cropping pattern and removal of drinki ng water problem was the visible impact appreciated by this team.

Non - conventional energy Construction of Bio-gas plants was promoted in Velhe block of Pune district wherein additional 14 Bio-gas plants with attached toilets were built during the year 1999 . In Mangdari, Kolawadi, Chirmodi and Wajeghar, 9 Bio gas Plants and attached latrines are were constructed. A local entrepreneur was encouraged to cast the cement blocks required for this construction.

One project engineer attended training course in respect of solar energy at Pondicherry in Dec.99. The follow up activity of the established "solar energy demonstration park" is going on regularly.
Cultivation of Medicinal Plants Quality Saplings were made available to more than 20 farmers in Pune an d Raigad Districts. Consultancy services were offered to a number of aspirants who visited JP. The promotion of organic farming has been coupled with this activity. The Govt. of India sanctioned a facility of 100% Income Tax Exemption to donors U/S 35 AC from April 98 onwards for 3 years.

Agro-Technical School, Shivapur - Since July 99, 25 students are undergoing various trade courses recognised by Maharashtra State Technical Education Board. In order to provide an on line work experience to students, ou tside job work is being carried out. Computer section is also carrying out in house as well as outside tasks. Various cultural activities , daily prayers etc., is a routine for the students.
Velhe Centre - Vivekananda Sports Meet took place at Ambavane. Each year, these Sports Competitions are held on Taluka level. Six schools of Velhe Taluka participated in the event. Rs. 10,000/- were collected as donations for this purpose from the villagers.
Sardar Natu Memorial Hall - Construction of this hall was com pleted in this year. The construction was started with the donation of Rs. 1,50,000/- given by Natu Foundation. Various Meetings, Training Programmes, Meetings of the leaders of Self Help Groups, Training Programmes of volunteers of JP, Camps and various lectures are arranged in this hall.
Other Activities - JP has participated in Continuing Education Programme in Kusgaon, Sanaswadi, Kondhanpur, Mangdari and Vajeghar. Four-point paddy cultivation and plantation of teak trees was also done in the last year.


10. Leprosy Relief Work

In this project, JP works for eradication of Leprosy as well as rehabilitation of the patients. During the period of report total 177 villages were surveyed. Medical Checkups were done in 275 schools. Total population of 1,13 ,632 was surveyed. The number of new patients detected leprosy was 134. Apart from the routine work various activities for health awareness were planned and were implemented throughout the year. 13 slide shows, 13 exhibitions, 907 Group discussions, 5 Tr a ining Programmes, 10 village meetings were held throughout the year. 6000 hand bills were printed and distributed among the people, 400 posters were made. Exhibitions were presented at Kikwi, Nasarapur and Velhe. In Kondhanpur, Velhe and Baneshwar, exhibi tions were arranged at the time of festival. Slide shows were arranged in 11 schools.


11. Training Cum Production :

Elevator Division

Elevator Division - for the first time - installed a Goods Lift with a Machine Room on the Ground Floor next to the sha ft. So far, they have been installing Lifts with Machine Room on top of the Shaft. Yearly, about 8 passenger lifts are installed by this Division in various towns of Maharashtra.

An educational tour was organised for members of the Division. The following places of interest were included in the tour. Gliding Centre-Hadapsar, Datta Devasthan- Narayanpur and Boat Club-Sarole.

Institute of Management And Leadership Development

During the report period, fifteen to sixteen hundred students completed their sho rt-term as well as long-term computer training programmes in various softwares as the syllabus is under continuous review and is updated. Our courses are popular in industrial field. Especially, courses like D.T.P., computerised financial accounting and Engineering drawing which give not only employment but self-employment also, are demanded very much. This routine work is carried on alongwith the other projects such as computer courses in jail.

Printing Division

Though the activity of this section is very small in volume, the printing division is satisfying its customers.


12.Gramodyog Pratishthan

CaNaC Udyog (CU) CaNaC Udyog is an industrial unit of Jnana Prabodhini Gramodyog Pratishthan, an affiliate trust of Jnana Prabodhini; specially rejuvenated to hold and conduct industrial ventures. CaNaC Udyog was formally started on 1 st May '97 at Shivapur.
CaNaC Udyog maintained all of its orders and increased its market share by achieving more than 40% growth continuously for first three years. CU has ado pted a policy of horizontal expansion in the niche products viz. Transmission shafts for washing machines and Valve Rocker assemblies. Four more types of shafts were developed for Godrej GE Appliances and two more types of Rocker assemblies were added to the assembly section.
CU faced three surveillance Quality audits by the ISO auditing agency and cleared all of the three with flying colours. Representative of CU was invited, as a model vendor, to present the quality systems, as practised at CU, bef ore the appraisal committee of Ravi Kirloskar Quality Prize; visiting Kirloskar Oil Engines Ltd.
In appreciation of the efforts put in by CU, resulting in successful development of components of suspension systems for a US based Firm, CU received an inv itation to visit US and finalise work orders. The Chief Executive of CU visited this US Firm and the machining of these export components is started at CU.


13. Jnana Prabodhini Research Society

PRAJNA MANAS SAMSHODHIKA (Institute of Psychology) Ph.D. Degree was conferred on following 3 students by Pune University for their theses on the topics listed below-

  1. Building group achievement motivation in sports team : by Dr. Jyoti Kanitkar, Guide - Dr. Ashok Nirpharake.
  2. Effect of sound on higher functions of brain : Dr. Anita Patil, Guide - Dr. P.S. Damle and Dr. Usha Khire.
  3. Training in social awareness for school children : by Dr. Anagha Lavalekar, Guide - Dr. Usha Khire.

Doctoral Researches are in progress on topics such as -

  1. Follow-up study of the development of personality of the gifted,
  2. Effect of parenting skills on child's mental abilities,
  3. Comparison of scores on Indian Child Intelligence Test (ICIT) of children with mental retardation and learning disabilities,
  4. A criti c al analysis of the psychometric properties of a computerised test battery,
  5. Exploring the concept of 'Satisfaction Profile',
  6. Effect of school climate on the development of gifted and average students : A longitudinal study and
  7. Follow up of the C hild Development Programme (CCDP).

Psychological testing was conducted for various industries, schools, institutes like HLL, Whirlpool, Thermax, Brintons, etc. More than 600 students availed the facility of computerised testing for aptitude, the first of its kind in India. The facility is entitled as I-AM, i.e. Intelligence and Aptitude Measurement.

Publication :

Garud Puranokta Ayurvijnana, a book by Smt. Shubhangi Deore was published with the help of Dr. P.V. Kane Trust. This is the outcome of research work completed in Santrika during the last three years.
The history of Sanskrit Literature - Part I 'Vedas and Vedangas' has been published at the hands of Dr. Shrikant Bahulkar, Director of Tilak Maharashtra Vidyapeeth, Pune.

Lectures / Seminars : Lectures were organised on various themes like India's constitution and secularism; Hinduism, Religion and Economics,Women Empowerment, Concept of Bhakti (Devotion) by Indian Saints etc.
A get-together for the adults who had completed the priesthood courses since 1989 to 1999 was held on 25th December 1999. Nearly 100 priests were present. Dr. Shrikant Bahulkar spoke to these priests on the various rituals in different religions.
Visits : Prof. Rimmoghe, Director, The Saranath Tibetian Teaching Centre. Shri Nanaji Deshmukh (2.9.99).

EDUCATIONAL ACTIVITIES RESEARCH CENTRE :
Training : Workshops for school children on the following topics were conducted in Pune and many other towns.

Extension Activities : Training was given to 50 teachers in Reading Skills, Self study skills, Vidyavrat Sanskara etc., in order to extend the activities of the centre in 25 schools in Maharashtra.

14. Jnana Prabodhini Medical Trust (JPMT)

This period under review saw manifold growth in the activities of JPMT and Sanjeevan Hospital managed by it. There was very good progress in regard to occupancy, new projects and purchase of medical equipment.
Occupancy - Occupancy of the hospital was consistently high. The average varied from 85% to 90 % throughout the period. Considering the acute shortage of rooms, construction work for additional rooms was take n in hand. Two floors have been added recently to the Sanjeevan Hospital. With this, 8 more special rooms, 16 semi-private rooms and 20 beds in General Ward have become available.
Training - In addition to continuous training of paramedical staff and do ctors a new chapter was opened- i.e. training of nurses in specialized institutions- one nurse Miss Marne was trained at Tata Cancer Research Institute. On 28 March 2000, Ms. Sudha Tadphale, Matron of the hospital and Ms. Vaishali Dangrikar left by AERO FLOT to Bremen, Germany for a five week training in Sankt Jurgen Hospital. This exchange training programme is a part of Pune-Bremen Sister City Co-operation and Agenda 21 programme.

Health Camps, Symposia and Conferences
Sterlization Camps - Female sterilization camps were arranged throughout 1998-99-2000. 52 free operations were carried out during this period.
School health checkup - During this period, two camps were conducted by our doctors at concessional rates to medically examine school children o f New English School, Pune. In 1998, 1800 children in one camp, and 396 children in the other, were examined between 13th and 18th December 99.
Hepatitis B immunization - A mass immunization programme against Hepatitis B was organized with the help of L ion's Club Pune Mega City from November 98 to November 99, which received great response. Three doses of Hepatitis B were given to more than 3000 persons at intervals of one month and six months.
On 25 November 1998, an eye camp was organized jointly with Dhondumama Sathe Homoeopathic College. 220 patients were benefitted from the camp.
'Umed Pariwar' - An organization dedicated to mentally retarded children has close links with our Hospital. We carry out medical examination and lab tests at very concesi onal rates for their members. In the camp held between 24 and 28 February 1999, 86 members were medically examined while in the camp held on 29th and 30th January 2000, 64 members were medically examined.
As many as 34 eye camps were conducted. More than 2000 patients were examined and total number of 525 cataract operations carried out at JPMT's Kamala Mehta Eye Hospital, Shirval. Sanjeevan Hospital and Shalom Club, Pune, jointly organised a seminar and workshop for `Breast Feeding and Lactation Manage ment', which was conducted by Dr. Armeda Fernandis and her team from Mumbai. The workshop was attended by 53 nurses and 35 paediatricians from various Paediatric units in Pune.
On 1st August 1998, Dr. Dhananjay Kelkar was awarded 'Dr. Wardekar Award' for social services in Scientific Field, instituted by Kesari-Maratha Trust.
On 6 th Sept. 1999, Pune Heart Brigade, a project sponsored by Rotary Club (Pune South) was inaugurated. A fully equipped ambulance manned by a team of doctor, nurse and attend ant will be available for any call of heart patients from Pune, totally free. The first ambulance has been donated by Shri Raghunathrao Chitale. Since its inauguration, nearly 100 patients have taken advantage of this facility. Second fully equipped ambul ance was donated to the Pune Heart Brigade by Shri Arun Kudale on 5th November 1999. With this, Sanjeevan Hospital is capable of handling heart patients for their immediate need.
A new project to build a 450-bed hospital (Phase I) in collaboration with La ta Mangeshkar Medical Foundation has started. To apprise Indian Community regarding this project and to collect donations for the same, a team consisting of Dr. Dhananjay Kelkar, Dr. Girish Godbole and Col. J. C. Pendse (Retd.), VSM., toured USA in June 1999 for one month.
They met a large number of donors and also visited well-known hospitals to study their functioning and layout.
The Bhoomi Poojan of the new hospital in collaboration with Lata Mangeshkar Medical Foundation was carried out at the hands of Swami Bhaumananda on 29 December 1999. The contract for construction is given to Shapoorji Pallanji, one of the leading builders in Maharashtra. The construction is likely to be completed in 15 months.

Purchase of Medical Equipment During this period, following important medical equipment was added to the inventory of the hospital - 1) Neonatal Ventilator (2) Two Dialysis Machines (3) Blood Gas Analyzer (4) Cell Counter (5) Opthalmic Laser (6) Phaco Machine (7) Adult Ventilator (8) Computers.
